drink2that: a TOAST to 2013

In honor of the New Year and to celebrate this past year, I am going to make a toast. Ahem, To a great year full of good food, full bellies, bold flavors, love and happiness, growth in the right direction and measurable success. May 2014 be bigger and better and even more flavorful!

All that is true, though I really meant a more figurative toast (made up of figures). I have collected my favorite images of drinks I have tried this year from the Beacon Big Apple at Beacon Bar, to the Red Root from Whitman & Bloom, to the Milano at Bar Felice, even to lazy gin mojitos and Pims at home and the occasional glass of wine at Satis. We are going to party like it’s 1999!

Otaiko Hibachi and Sushi Lounge is definitely an interesting place. A Hibachi and Sushi spot in a strip mall, in Bayonne, to top it all off. Sounds like a recipe for disaster. But instead it is oddly enchanting, and truly delicious-- strong drinks, smoking hibachi, scrumptious sushi and sly udon noodles. See more of the deets in my yelp review.

Christmas cookies are an important tradition in my house. No matter how busy everyone is or what else is going on, a massive amount of Christmas cookies are made (hopefully before Christmas Day). It is a veritable Bake-A-Thon as we make bars, drop cookies and cookies that must be rolled out.

In years past, baking Christmas cookies has been an event that my mother, sister and I did together, from creating a list of cookies that hardly ever changes, to grabbing ingredients, down to prepping the mixtures, and mass producing sugar cookies. This year was a little different. We were not all here at the same time with conflicting schedules and such, but somehow it got done (and even before Christmas). We still feel connected through the baking and munching of this year’s delicious cookies.

Hope everyone had a super happy holiday! There is most definitely a reason why the holiday season is called “the most wonderful time of the year.” And that is because it really just is. Beginning with the preparations of Thanksgiving dinner running all the way through the New Year, is a magical time. There always seems to be more food, more love and more laughter. It is a time when we get to indulge in family moments and memories, while stuffing our face with holiday baked goods and Christmas cookies (stay tuned), fishes and meats, pastas and sides, and tasty treats galore. Really, what’s not wonderful about the holiday season (other than mall traffic and amplified caloric intake)?
