happiest hour: The Cuban

RER 4.20.15
They were spontaneous for his birthday. It was a Monday and they decided they would not be quiet. They would step out of the box and sit at the bar.

This time the dark red walls of The Cuban were not suffocating and the low hanging lights felt brighter. Even the bar felt welcoming and open, not just high stools and slick counters. It was different. Better. They were celebrating a birthday.

They were ready to take on the menu. Both menus.

Their happiest hour involved a rainbow of mojitos and caipirinhas: blush with guava, golden with passion fruit, electric with apples and winter white with coconut. Each was distinct and flavorful, and strong enough to keep her giggling.

But the bites held an intensity of feelings and flavors, satiating hungry eyes and insides. Fatty and delightful pork pieces blending with slinky onions and garlic green mojo were hardly forgotten in the tumult of their mirth.

Warm moments of sticky sweet plantains wrapped with thin salty bacon and showered with farmer’s cheese made them tongue-tied, when their mouths knew no bounds.

Mussels and chorizo sinking in wet broth and encaged by soft aioli-drizzled and smoky paprika-dusted fries made messes like wet kisses.

They gulped down the drinks and the atmosphere, laughed too loudly, and showed their affection, through delicious bites and wide smiles. Of course they did, because it was his birthday...

west coast snacks: SAVORIES

RER 8.28.14
We ate the sweets, but we could not forget to indulge in some savory deliciousness on our trip either! Salty, meaty yumminess coming at ya!

In-N-Out, Goletea
No trip to California is complete with In-N-Out Burger (I guess, that’s what they say). We got Double- Doubles, and two orders of french fries: one regular, one animal style (gotta try it). Delicious fast food at its finest, plus we were starving.

Eggslut, Los Angeles
Thankfully, located on the edge of Grand Central Market in LA, Eggslut saved us right in time. We were starving, hot and pretty hangry, but delicious Eggslut sammies put most everything right. We ordered the Nita and Gaucho sandwiches (not the burger against my better judgment). Despite the heavy dose of bread from the Veneto roll, the insides were eggslutty and delicious. The pulled pork was soft and melted our mouths, melding with the smooth luxury of runny yolk. And the tart and tangy chimicurri and pickled red onions made the spice crusted seared wagyu steak much more delicious.
Eggslut guy: How was it?
Diner: Delicious, I love eggs!
Eggslut guy: You’ve come to the right place
Diner: Slutty eggs are even better!
Eggslut guy: Slutty anything is better!

Wexler’s, Los Angeles
Holy corned beef! I love corned beef anything. Our Reuben sandwich from Wexler’s was piled high with thick, chucky slices of corned beef, some melty swiss, a thin layer of sauerkraut and an even thinner layer of Thousand Island dressing. The sandwich was incredible greasy— tolerable for the first half, but extremely difficult for the second. This was unfortunate as the heavy-duty sandwich was off to a great start.

photo op: RECENT eats

RER 7.30.14
Eating should not be a chore. It really shouldn’t, especially for someone who loves to eat. Like me, I love to eat. But lately, it has been not so satisfying. Yes, I have had delicious things, like fresh cherries and juicy pineapple, an array of tiny cheesecakes my way and health conscious cookies from A&I Nutreats, and sweet rosé and crisp chips at The Writing Room.

And tasty things like homemade olive gravy and grilled-just-right ribs, and thick bacon egg bagels from Wonder Bagels and topping tame frozen yogurt at Downtown Yogurt. But it just hasn’t been the same.

photo op: THROWBACK THURSDAY

In honor of #TBT aka Throwback Thursday and as we get closer to the end of 2013, I am sharing some of my favorite food photos from my instagram. It is incredible how time is flying by, but looking back at photos sparks certain things. These are those small moments that we take for granted in a culture of instant gratification. But for me that does not mean instantly forgotten. I can remember exactly where I was, how the air smelled, how the food tasted on my lips, from texture to flavor to feelings incited. Photos for me are just snapshots of memories that linger on my tastebuds and fingertips, a way of recreating and reliving what shouldn’t be lost.

And I hope you will all follow along on facebook, instagramtwitter and now pintrest if you don’t already! I do appreciate all the support!
