MangiaMore: RED velvet sandwich cookies

RER 3.6.14
Sometimes we cheat, and sometimes it’s worth it. Yesterday, I needed a little pick-me-up, something to do and something to distract. I’ve been a little busy with other things, things other than food, unfortunately. There hasn’t been much food lately that has inspired me, or any recipes that I really wanted to make, or even a restaurant I wanted to try. The only thing edible that I have been constantly thinking about were these silly red velvet sandwich cookies pictured on the back of the Duncan Hines Red Velvet Cake mix box. It has been in my peripheral vision since I prepped for Food Fun Valentine’s Day cupcakes. But, yesterday was the day I made them. Found the recipe using the cake mix, added an egg, melted butter and vanilla. The recipe calls for a can of Duncan Hines frosting, but I made my own quick cream cheese butter cream. They turned out super sweet and pretty to look at, a little more chocolaty than I would have thought, but deffo worth the cheat (for the moment).

second YELPing...

We headed to Union Square on a quest for medieval costume pieces for an upcoming birthday celebration. Just down the street from our costume destination, is a food spot my friend and I have been to a few times before for a quick breakfast and a little lunch. Because of its proximity and its different menu, we decided to go to Max Brenner for a late lunch and much needed catch up session. My first time, I was not enthusiastic, but the smells of chocolates, chili and cocoa dusted waffle fries and the plethora of sweet things brought me back. It feels like a cafĂ© that would be in the middle of Willy Wonka’s Chocolate factory, serving up comforting foods with a twist, a waffle here and cocoa powder there. This time, I was happy with the food, but the service was severely lacking. Take a peek at the pretty eats and check out my yelp review for more of the deets!

This weekend I was lucky to not only escape the dreary weather of the North East, but also attend my boyfriend’s sister’s intimate wedding ceremony down in the Cocoa Beach area of Florida. Temperatures were warmer, but what made the trip the most enjoyable was spending time with the families and being a part of the small gathering. While we were away, there was a ton of eating, of course. The groom’s mother mentioned in one of many toasts, during one of many meals, that both families like to talk and to eat, which was made quite obvious during this celebratory long weekend. I had some seafood at Milliken’s Reef at Port Canaveral,

This was just the beginning. The restaurant landscape was quite different from up here, as there were more chains and fewer "mom and pop" establishments—we tasted a little mix of both.
